Baja St. Martin

I’m not sure the saying Spring comes in like a lamb, goes out like a lion applies to March and even more I think I’ve got it wrong. Anyway, March went out like a lion over here with heavy rain and pretty nasty winds which lasted until noon at least, then the sun came out and it was up into the low 80s.

My sister said the storms knocked the power out in her area of Michigan for over 200,000 people. My daughter in Tennessee reported she and her husband sheltered in their basement just in case. Crazy.

And I’m reading about a Hyundai steel plant possibly being built over by Donaldsonville. That seems like a great thing—offering lot of employment, et al.

Also, I’m hearing that the St. Martin Parish President Pete Delcambre had talked to the St Mary Parish President about annexing or adding to or something Lower St. Martin Parish to St Mary Parish. I believe that will not be happening and I’m not sure how I feel about that except I don’t know enough to make any decent decisions. Voting for the 4 amendments was bad enough. I did receive a computer note from the LRTA (Louisiana Retired Teacher Association( that Amendment 2 was poorly worded, saying the LRTA was in favor of it but many voters didn’t understand it.

I guess amendments have to be worded properly/legally in order to be legal but it does seem they could be phrased a bit simpler. The LRTA sent out emails saying they were in favor of Amendment 2 but I think it didn’t pass because of the confusing wording.

I’m told the concrete post structures sticking up at a piece of property before you get to Stephensville will eventually hold a house. I’d sort of thought it might be a business of sort because it’s so extensive.

The levee has been freshly mowed. The aroma is wonderful. Bingo for Seniors on April 1, was no joke. We had a crowd. A number of new people were in attendance. While we played inside, Mr. Bobby Czeck and a few others installed a brand new bench along the walking trail. The old one had been seriously damaged by somebody joy riding in a truck. The men also completed work on the new exercise equipment along the trail. As I passed they mentioned what they were doing, but I was already late to Bingo and didn’t listen carefully. I’m pretty sure the equipment is ready to use. And before today but recently, the recreation board had concrete poured at the edge of the driveway where there used to be grass. Now the Bingo ladies and/or park visitors who use rollators, canes and wheelchairs do not have to traverse a strip of grass to reach the sidewalk. Thanks so much to the recreation board.

Third grade LEAP testing at Stephensville Elementary began April 3 and continues into the next week, followed by LEAP testing for the 4th-8th grades. Then everybody gets to take a week off for Easter Break and recover from all that brain drain.

Every now and then when I’m in an ‘old lady’ mood perhaps, I wonder how people my age ever managed to get through school without all these tests. I guess we didn’t know how we compared to other students or how our school was doing. Actually I know how my schools—the grade schools at least were doing. They had the best out in the backyard bathrooms(outhouse) and the water pumps in the front yard gushed out the most magnificent cold water in the world if you pumped really hard. I doubt if my 5th-6th grade teacher was ‘certified’ but she did ok in a one room building with six grades. There might have been a fight or two in the backyard but never, ever inside the building. Those were the days!!!!!!!!!
