Ray Joseph Girouard
Lafayette – A Mass of Christian Burial, time pending, will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Scott for Ray Joseph Girouard, 93, who passed away, Sunday, August 6, 2017.
Interment will be in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Scott.
Reverend Kenneth Domingue, Pastor of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, Leonville, will be Celebrant of Mass and conduct funeral services.
Born in Broussard in 1923 to Sidney and Alma Guilbeau Girouard, he was a native of Lafayette and later moved to Breaux Bridge in 1999, 18 years ago. He later moved to Courtyard Manor in Lafayette in February of 2014 after suffering a stroke in December of 2013.
He attended school in Scott and worked for Home Supply, Mer Jay, Clarence Leblanc Service Station and Lafayette Woodworks. He and his wife, Rose, were owners of Girouard Grocery Store and later Ray J. Girouard Plumbing and Heating for over 42 years. He was a member of VFW Post #9822 in Judice and American Legion Post #133 in Breaux Bridge. He crossed the equator on November 21, 1943, serving in the South Pacific. He received the Bronze Medical Battle Star and numerous other certificates.
Ray helped build the first St. Jules Church in Lafayette and helped build the VFW in Judice. He worked bingos and volunteered at the Post. If someone needed help and if he could help them, he would. He made lots of friends wherever he went. He was known as “POPPA RAY”.
He loved to dance and could be seen at Vermillionville, Bridge Bar, Randall’s and Mulate’s, dancing to just about all dances. His pride and joy were his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his five generation great-great-grandchildren.
He married Rose Mae Domingue on May 26, 1945 and was married for 59 years until her death on May 25, 2004.
Left to cherish his memories are his three daughters, Sandra Kidder of Scott, Penny Pauley and financé, Wayne Machann of Trinity, Texas, and Raye Ann “Tiger” (Craig) Comeaux of Breaux Bridge; five granddaughters, Vickie Kidder, Mrs. Verna (Todd) Romero of Scott, Brandi Comeaux and boyfriend, Justin Simon of Estherwood, Mrs. Ashley (Brayton) Leger of St. Martinville, Krystle Pauley and financé and Tre Thibodeaux of Ossun; eight great-grandchildren, Mrs. Dawn (Dustin) Thibodeaux of Duson, Jeremy (Bralea) Stevens of Scott, Krista Stevens and partner Shamie Menard of Kaplan, Johnny Winn of Lafayette, Jon Spell of Estherwood, Coen Leger of St. Martinville, Sophia Thibodeaux of Ossun, Finley Rose Simon (due in September); ten great-great-grandchildren, Emily, Elyse and Eric Thibodeaux of Duson, Landon, Faithlyn and Abbigail Stevens of Scott, Jaylee Bonin, Brantlon and A’Laina Harrington, Kaeslyn Stevens of Kaplan; and one brother, Harold (Bim) Girouard of Lafayette.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Sidney and Alma Girouard of Lafayette; wife, Rose Mae Domingue; daughter, Emetile Grace; son-in-law, John Azarias Kidder; great-grandson, Benjamin Winn; grandson-in-law, Christopher Stevens; brothers, Ernest, Walton, Louis and Sidney “Pat” Girouard; and sisters, Nelda (Jerome) Judice and Irene (P.V.) Landry.
The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille’s SCOTT location on Friday, August 11, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. until time of service.
A Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. in Martin & Castille Funeral Home. Following Rosary, American Legion of Breaux Bridge will conduct a Final Salute.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Herschel Girouard, T-Hersh Girouard, Dustin Thibodeaux, Jeremy Stevens, Jon M. Boudreaux, Timmy Breaux, Rod Fuselier and Todd Romero. Honorary pallbearers will be Craig Comeaux, Johnny Winn, Landon Stevens, Jon Spell, Brantlon Harrington, Eric Thibodeaux Coen Leger and Brayton Leger.
A heartfelt appreciation is extended by the Girouard family to Courtyard Manor as well as family, friends and residents of the facility, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital-3rd Floor, St. Martin Hospital and Rehabilitation in Breaux Bridge and St. Joseph’s Carpenter House.
