‘She was Born to Serve’
St. Martinville – Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Notre Dame Catholic Church for Jessie Mae Benjamin James, 81, who died peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, May 11, 2017.
The family will receive visitors beginning at 7 a.m. at Notre Dame Catholic Church. Fr Michael Suchavski, SVD (Pastor) will be the celebrant of the Funeral Mass.
Jessie Mae was well known for giving tirelessly to those in the community. She was often seen cooking for weddings and funerals with her longtime friend Mrs. Gloria Devalcourt. She was a consummate caregiver to family and a surrogate “Mother” to nieces, nephews, and was a strong positive influence in all her grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s life. Her gratitude towards others and God was evident throughout her life. Her kind gentle manner will be missed by all.
Mrs. Jessie Mae James is survived by three children, Menda (Steven Sr.) Batiste, Antoine (Vallerie) James Jr. and Patricia James; two sisters, Celena Benjamin Wiltz and Loverna Benjamin Babin; one brother, Patrick (Nola Mae) Benjamin; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by husband, Antoine Doris James Sr.; daughter, Beverly Wiltz; parents, George and Amanda Benjamin; four sisters, Margaret Benjamin Clement, Mary Benjamin Richard, Joanella Benjamin Blanchard and Eva Benjamin Labbe; and four brothers, Elton Benjamin, Jessie Benjamin Sr., Joseph M Benjamin and Sterling Benjamin.
Pallbearers will be Steven Batiste Jr., Jermaine Batiste, Andrew James, Aaron James, Benjamin James and Jeremy James. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Patrick Benjamin, Steven Batiste Sr., Melvin Wiltz, Paulmer James Jr., Michael Lewis and Jermaine Carrier.
The family wishes to acknowledge special thanks and gratitude to Patricia James for her Loving and constant care of “Maw” over the years. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to Community Hospice Care for outstanding service, especially Zachary David, RN, Regina Clark-Mallery and Phyllis Babineaux. Also thanks to our Notre Dame church family, Progressive Baptist Church family and many devoted friends who supported us.
Mrs. Jessie James and her family were cared for and entrusted final arrangements to Louisiana Funeral Services & Crematory of Broussard (337-330-8006).
