COVID not too hard on parish’s finances

In a report to the Parish Council at the Aug. 4 meeting, President Chester Cedars outlined the latest data on the parish’s financial status during the COVID-19 pandemic that has impacted the economy since late March.
Cedars reported that June revenues, the most current for which detailed information is available, were down only about ten percent from 2019 figures. Not a good development, but certainly not a “worst case” scenario either, he said.

Board delays action on employee salaries

For the second time in as many months the St. Martin School Board delayed action on a proposed salary increase for the system’s almost 1,000 employees.
District 9 representative Floyd Knott has been urging board members to approve a salary increase and offered a motion during last Wednesday’s meeting to grant all employees an $80 per month raise.
But a substitute motion by Mark Hebert and Steve Fuselier put the issue on hold until the board’s September meeting.

Rural areas of parish lack broadband access

With the school year cut short on March 16 by the COVID-19 pandemic, students and teachers have become dependent on internet access to insure that the needed subject matter is still covered. Without it, students could find themselves at a disadvantage when they transition to the next grade.
At the June 16 parish council committee meetings, President Chester Cedars said he was surprised to learn how many St. Martin Parish students who live in rural areas do not have high-speed internet access at home.
