FOR SALE? Some St. Martinville officials have proposed the sale of the historic Duchamp Opera House in the city’s downtown historic district. The building, which dates back to the 1830s, was donated to the city by the Reuben-Willie-Zerben Bienvenu family in 1998 and underwent extensive renovations. But the cost of keeping the facility open, with little or no income-producing activites generated, is being called into question.(Sally Angelle)

The city has begun looking for ideas to eliminate the ongoing expense of owning the 1830-vintage Duchamp Opera House. At the September 18 city council meeting, Dist.1 councilman Mike Fuselier said the time has come to rethink the city’s involvement with the historic building.

Atchafalaya Basin Bridge Now Open

State Police has advised that the Atchafalaya Basin bridge eastbound is now open however motorists are urged to take an alternate route if they are traveling to Baton Rouge.

Accident on I-10 East Has Traffic Backed Up For 3 Miles

An accident on I-10 eastbound has traffic backed up for at least three miles.  The crash which appears to have involved a passenger car and an 18 wheeler occurred near mile marker 125 just west of Whiskey Bay.  There are reported injuries however the extent of those are unknown at this time.

BB Police Seeks Help in Armed Robbery Case

On November 14, 2013, at approximately 7:00 p.m., an unknown male suspect robbed Security Finance on Rees Street in Breaux Bridge, The suspect brandished a handgun and left with the business with an undisclosed amount of money.

Deputies with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office are seeking the public’s assistance in locating Carrie A. Artigue, 39, Lafayette.

Artigue is wanted on suspicion of theft over $500 and theft of business records.

She is suspected of taking confidential documents from a former employer.
