SM library director visits VFC meeting

Charlar Brew, St. Martin Parish Library director, was the guest speaker at the August St. Martin Volunteers for Family and Community (SMVFC) Council meeting.

Brew is a native of St. Martinville and has worked in the Iberia Parish school system, St. Martin Parish Library and South Louisiana Community College.

She is very active in the community and is a member of many professional organizations. She gave the group an update on the parish library system, with an overview of the services available through the St. Martin Parish Library.

Members were encouraged to obtain a library card and to become a member of “Friends of the Library.”

The group finalized plans for the day trip to view the Vivian Alexander exhibit at the Archives in Baton Rouge.

The September meetings will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 1:30 p.m. in the Ag Building in Breaux Bridge.

The Catahoula meeting will be held at Lil Blanchard’s home on Sept. 15 at 1:30 p.m. Nicki Lemaire, from the Ag Center, will speak on health issues and Katie Hebert, chief executive officer of St. Martin Hospital, will give members an update on the hospital.

Awards Day is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 13, at St. Francis of Assisi Church Hall. Entries must be entered between 9 and 10. The speaker will be Rob Hollier, a local pharmacist, who will speak on medication issues. Food categories will be corn, chicken, ground beef, Irish potatoes, yeast bread (wheat or white flour) and sweet potatoes as a dessert.

Craft categories will be tote/craft bag, dish carrier, crotched footies (adult), Christmas tree skirt, Christmas stocking and pin cushion (any type). Leaders were named for all categories.

The skit will be a “Talent Contest.”

Mini-College will be held at Tall Timbers on Nov. 2 and 3 for the purpose of officer training. All parish officers and committee chairmen will attend.

The November meeting will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 9, in the Ag Building at 1:30 p.m. Local artists will give demonstrations on their craft.

The Christmas luncheon will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Crawfish Town USA.

Elsie Castille, president, presided and also gave a report on the Wanda Landry Scholarship Fund.

46 members were in attendance.

A luncheon followed at Buck and Johnny’s Pizzeria.
