St. Martinville – Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church for Joseph “Ophe” Romero, 84, who passed away on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, at Dauterive Hospital in New Iberia.

Interment will follow at St. Michael Cemetery.

Reverend Austin Leger will officiate at the Funeral Mass. Serving as gift bearers are his children, Larry, Alton and Carol.

Mr. Romero was a farmer and an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He enjoyed meeting people and loved to play his accordion, often playing under the Evangeline Oak tree in St. Martinville for many years, along with his brother, Lennis. They played at many private parties, benefits, and other special events.

“Ophe” was married to Evelyn, the love of his life, for 62 beautiful years.

Survivors include his loving wife, Evelyn S. Romero of St. Martinville; two sons, Larry Romero and his wife Judith L. of Iota, and Alton Romero of St. Martinville; one daughter, Carol Hall and her husband Eric of Baton Rouge; six grandchildren, Donald Hall and Stacy Hall of Baton Rouge, Paul Hall of Zachary, Shayne Hall of New Iberia, Tyler Romero of Lafayette, and Colby Romero of Youngsville; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Olivier and Naomi Leger Romero; three brothers Lennis, Gladys and Joe Romero; and two sisters, Annie Romero and Annix Gaspard.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home from 7 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be Whitney Romero, Tyler Romero, Colby Romero, Donald Hall, Paul Hall and Shayne Hall.

Honorary pallbearers will be Larry and Alton Romero.

Pellerin Funeral Home of St. Martinville is in charge of arrangements.
