DELCAMBRE - A Delcam bre 14-year-old student is charged by authorities for possibly setting two small fires at Delcambre High School Wednesday morning.

The youth was arrested by the Sheriff Department Wednesday and charged with aggravated arson.

Before school began, students and teachers noticed smoke coming from a class room in the south-wing of the junior high buildings. When the teacher walked into the classroom, the teacher saw a bulletin board on fire. The fire was put out quickly by the teacher.

The fire alarm sounded and the students left the buildings and walked to the football field and in front of the school.

The student who was charged was seen walking out of the classroom moments before the teacher saw the smoke.

Delcambre Principal Cory Bourque spoke with the teacher who saw the fire and then summoned the student seen leaving the classroom to the office.

The fire alarm sounded and the students left the buildings and walked to the football field and in front of the school.

While speaking to the student, Bourque was informed there was a second small fire on the opposite side of the campus which was extinguished. A pile of leaves and paper looked to have been set on fire in between buildings, Bourque said.

The fire departments from Iberia Parish, Delcambre, Abbeville and other departments responded.

The students waited outside until the campus was cleared of any other fires.

An investigation has begun by the state fire marshal’s office as to how the fire began.

Bourque, said he has never had a student try to catch the school on fire in the 15 years he has been principal. He was also proud of his staff.

“I want to commend the faculty because they were quick to respond,” Bourque said. “Students cooperated.”

School continued throughout the day.
