CROWLEY - The Crowley Kiwanis Boxing Club hosted a hometown twenty-two bout card of exciting amateur boxing at the Rice Festival Building on Saturday December 6, 2008. Louisiana boxers who participated in the event were from Abbeville, Alexandria, Carencro, Crowley, Cutoff, Golden Meadow, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Larose, Clinton, Rayne, and Shreveport. Boxers from Pearl, Mississippi also participated in the event.

Leading the pack for the Crowley team was hard-hitting Tyrese Cormier (62 lbs.) who defeated Dylan Landry (67 lbs.) of Lafayette in a three round decision. Crowley’s Lucas Lejeune (76 lbs.) lost to Tyler Nixon (82 lbs.) early in the first round due to an arm injury where Dr. Stephen Cannon was called into the ring and stopped the fight.

In what was deemed the best fight of the night, Crowley southpaw Timothy Suire (103 lbs.) lost to the more experienced Desman Withers (103 lbs.) of Westlake on a very close split decision. From the moment the first bell rang there was non-stop toe-to toe punching action by both opponents that kept the crowd standing and cheering for both fighters. Suire was a great sportsman and gave his opponent a very tough fight.

Ross Elementary school fourth grade teacher Christopher Davy (147 lbs) defeated Corey Guidry (147 lbs) of the Larose, in a unanimous decision. Davy’s combinations and straight right hand proved to be too much for Guidry. The Larose fighter was dazed in all three rounds and received a standing eight count in the third round.

In the main event of the night, one of Crowley’s finest boxers, Floyd Baker Jr. (110 lbs.) lost by a close decision to veteran Barry Dudley (110 lbs.) of Shreveport. Baker had fought and won the night before in Lafayette at the Blackham Coliseum on Bad Chad Broussard’s Professional-Amateur boxing card. The Baker-Dudley fight was a real crowd pleaser with both boxers showing some of the finest boxing skills of all the bouts.
