Things are quiet in Baja St. Martin. The Belle River bridge is really a pleasure to drive upon although traffic delays are fairly frequent. There are always men standing about on the bridge maintenance walkway – some actually appear to be working.
The old pontoon section passed going upriver. Don’t know where it was heading, but it was being pushed by a Settoon tug.
The river water is almost normal in appearance. I believe the presence of many white and grey herons on the docks and posts in the water must signify that the water quality is decent. They don’t seem to be stalking about the yards as much. And the ducks are out in large quantities. Since I feed them daily, a large flock appears off my front deck bright and early, quacking away for breakfast.
The dry weather allows the mosquito abatement truck to pass frequently. The cooler weather, also, seems to have diminished the mosquito population.
A slump in the levee in Belle River was repaired last week. A bulldozer was pushing several piles of dirt up the levee where the surface had slid down.
The Sheriff’s Office is holding an annual Christmas gumbo for seniors on Dec. 5 in the Stephensville Elementary School gym from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Seniors 55 and up are invited along with caregivers. No children, please. This is for us older folk. There will be Bingo, I hear, and door prizes.
Things are quiet in Four-Mile Bayou like everywhere else. Wanda Gros said Gros’ Marina was open and a few customers dropped in now and then but not much going on. She said the residents had received a letter saying the first of the two bridge repair jobs on the Four Mile Bayou road would begin Dec. 1, and that it would take about 10 days for each bridge. There would likely be a period of about three days when both bridges would be closed to vehicular traffic, and Wanda thought people would just leave cars or trucks on both sides like we did here in Belle River. It really doesn’t make much difference if the body of water is a trickle or a wide river, the logistics of getting from one side to the other are the same.
Thanksgiving holidays will be from Nov. 24 through Nov. 28 for Stephensville Elementary. Assumption Parish schools will have one day less to help make up those hurricane days.
