He beat state Sen. Don Cravins. In Vermilion Parish, Boustany had 16,115 votes while Cravins had 6,478 votes.
Nancy Landry of Lafayette defeated Maurice’s Troy Theriot in the state representative District 31 race.
Theriot had 2,347 votes in Vermilion Parish, while Landry captured 1,935 votes.
Around the Gueydan area, Grayson Benoit won the Ward 8 Constable race. He beat Shelby Simon 769 votes to 648 votes.
Sixty eight percent of the parish voted in Vermilion Parish. Out of 36,722 voters, 25,179 voted.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu jumped out to an early lead Tuesday over Republican opponent John Kennedy and held on to win.Landrieu, never one to win easily, was seeking a third term in office, while Kennedy, the Louisiana state treasurer, was taking his second shot at a U.S. Senate seat — this time as a Republican.
In early returns, Landrieu led with 51 percent of the vote, compared to 46 percent for Kennedy, with nearly one quarter of precincts reporting.
The race was one of the nation’s most expensive Senate contests, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics’ Web site OpenSecrets.org. The candidates — and third party groups supporting them — launched repeated TV attack ads.
