Mamou Elementary School is proud to announce the implementation of a new program entitled the “Big Buddy Reading Program.” <!--break-->This program teams fourth graders, the “Big Buddies,” with the children in kindergarten, the “Little Buddies.” The “Big Buddies” select a book that focuses on the time of year, and with the assistance of their teachers, they create a lesson plan. Each fourth grader or “Big Buddy” is teamed with one or two kindergartners. The fourth grader introduces themselves to the kindergartner and carries out the lesson plan ending in the creation of a craft. As this is autumn and Halloween was fast approaching, in the first Big Buddy event, the craft was the creation of a bat-shaped pin for the kindergartner to keep and wear.

This is a great program, and the “Big Buddies” will keep the same “Little Buddy” for the entire year and again will be allowed to have this same type of interaction several times during the year. The program will help the children learn to build relationships, develop a love of reading and have fun with books.
