Votes gave Acadia Parish Sheriff Wayne Melancon a new term in last fall's election, but they're not ready to give him a new tax.

Melancon asked voters in the Saturday, July 19, election to approve a 9-mill tax. They said no, in an overwhelming fashion, with about 82 percent pulling that lever.

The five-year tax was to supplement salaries, buy and maintain equipment, and provide additional operation and training funding.
