Democratic State Sen. Don Cravins, Jr. formalized Wednesday what had been presumed for some time -- he will seek the 7th Congressional District seat in the U.S. Congress in October.
The seat is held by Republican Charles Boustany, Jr., who is seeking re-election.
Cravins was elected to a full term in the 24th Senate District seat in the Legislature last fall.
He had been elected in 2006 to fill the unexpired term of his father, who resigned to become mayor of Opelousas.
Prior to that, Cravins served in the Louisiana House of Representatives for two years.
Boustany was first elected in December 2004. He is serving his second two-year.
Two prominent area politicians head Cravins’ campaign committee.
Fellow Sen. Nick Gautreaux of Abbeville (Dist. 26) is chairman and St. Landry Clerk of Court Charlie Jagneaux is treasurer.
Cravins lives in Opelousas, Boustany in Lafayette. Cravins is an attorney, Boustany is a cardiovascular surgeon.
Cravins' most visible legislative work has been on insurance committees. He is chairman of the Senate Insurance Committee.
He is also a member of Judiciary B, Local & Municipal Affairs and Retirement.
Boustany has been engaged in the hurricane recovery process from the day he took office three months after Rita struck.
He is a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure, Education and Labor and Agriculture committees, and ranking Republican on one Ag subcommittee.
