CROWLEY – John Suire was the guest speaker at Tuesday’s meeting of the Crowley Rotary Club. Suire spoke about Garber Farms, located in Iota, and one of the leading Louisiana distributors of sweet potatoes.
Suire spoke about the origins of Garber Farms, beginning with its start as a family-owned business selling sweet potatoes in sacks out of the barn, to the large organization Garber Farms has grown into today.
Garber Farms produces about 700 acres of sweet potatoes per year, which they transport throughout Louisiana, the northeastern and southeastern U.S., Canada, and also to England and France. According to Suire, the U.S. does not import sweet potatoes.
Garber Farms is also a sweet potato broker, transporting the vegetable for other farms in the area.
Suire also spoke about the production of sweet potatoes, starting with the March planting and ending with the harvest in September or October.
According to Suire, Garber Farms also plants crops, including rice and soybeans.
