Cecilia first sacker Sage Guidry manages to keep his foot on the base as he stretches for a throw to get the out during last week’s playoff game with the Rayville Hornets. The Bulldogs suffered a 3-0 shutout and were eliminated from post-season play.

Fans of both Breaux Bridge and Cecilia baseball programs faced disappointment last Tuesday as both teams suffered defeat in the regional round of the state playoffs.

The Tigers of Breaux Bridge fell to Sam Houston in Class 4A action while Cecilia’s Bulldogs were defeated by Rayville in Class 3A.

Breaux Bridge fell behind early as Sam Houston jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. The Tigers managed to close the gap to 5-2 after two innings, but the Moss Bluff team piled on five more runs over the next three innings to take control of the game.

“Our pitching was OK,” commented coach Kyle Cormier following the game. “But we did not play very well on offense or defense. And that really hurts when you’re up against a good team like Sam Houston.”

The Bridge ended its season with a 21-8 record, and while they were unable to get as far in the playoffs as last year (when the Tigers reached the semifinals before falling to Captain Shreve), it was still an outstanding year for the program.

Bulldog batters just couldn’t get to Rayville pitcher Josh Absher (11-1), who allowed just one hit while striking out nine ’Dogs.

“Their pitcher just did a phenomenal job,” observed Bulldog coach Jamie Calais.

Rayville’s three runs were all unearned as Cecilia pitcher Gadge Norris (5-4) struck out 10 Hornets while giving up seven hits.

The Bulldogs finish up with a fine 25-8 record, quite an improvement over last year’s 18-12 worksheet.
