St. Martinville – Northside High School proved to be the dominant force in the annual running of the Cajun Chef Relays held at St. Martinville Sr. High School last Friday, April 11. Blustery winds and a short downpour hampered the athletes a bit, forced a brief delay in the competition and resulted in the cancellation of one event in the girls division.

The Vikings ran away with team trophies in both the boys and girls division. The Northside boys compiled 157 points while second place Cecilia had to settle for 98. St. Martinville and Breaux Bridge finished fourth and fifth behind Opelousas with 65 and 62 points, respectively.

Viking athletes claimed blue ribbons in six of the 11 individual running events and two of the three relays while also picking up the gold in the discus and pole vault.

Cecilia picked up first place in the 100 meter dash and 4X100 relay along with five second place finishes and four thirds.

St. Martinville’s only gold medal came in the long jump where Brandon Batiste topped the field. The Tigers added to their total by finishing second in the 4X100 relay and third in the 4X400 and four other individual events.

The Bridge managed two first place finishes — Ricky Babineaux in the triple jump and a tie in the high jump by Leland Phillips. BB also finished second in the 4X200 relay and third in the 4X100, 100 hurdles and pole vault.

Girls Competition

Northside’s Lady Vikings were even more dominant, collecting 198 points while St. Martinville was a distant second with 78. Cecilia’s Lady Bulldogs finished third with 46 points while Breaux Bridge manage only 17½.

The ’Ville’s only first place came in the long jump, won by Tiffany Richard. Richard was named the meet’s Outstanding Field Performer as she also placed second in the high jump as well as the 100 and 300 hurdles, accounting for a big chunk of SM’s points.

Keyara Martin was also a big contributor, finishing third in both the 800 and 1600 runs.

Cecilia’s best efforts came in the relays, where the Lady Bulldogs won the 4X100 and finished second in the 4X200.
