Each school that visited the Houston Museum was judged on a project submitted based on the theme “Louisiana Bicentennial.”
In addition, earlier in the summer the group attended the 2012 Youth and Family Expo at Southern University, where they participated in an illustrative talk an quiz bowl competition.
Ja’Vaughn Narcisse, Kaisha Oliver and Kylee Mitchell, all of SMJH, won the illustrative talk competition with a talk on academic success in their school and community.
The Educational Talent Search students also went on a field trip to the Barnes and Noble bookstore in Lafayette.
Educational Talent Search is an extension of the UL-Lafayette’s Trio Program. Throughout the regular school year, it serves as a homework tutoring service for the sixth, seventh and eighth grade members from SMJH.
To be eligible for membership in the program, students must be a first generation college student.
The summer enrichment part of the program focuses on English, Language Arts, Math and technology.
There are two site supervisors from SMJH – Caroline Jean-Batiste and Neil Armstead, and two high school peer tutors – Jacinda Narcisse and Taylor Richard.
The peer tutors assist teachers with lessons and share high school experiences with members of the program.
