Lafayette – Breaux Bridge used a balanced approach in winning the team championship at the District 5-4A track and field meet here last week.

Tiger athletes captured six blue ribbons – three on the track and three in the field events – on their way to scoring 148 points to top second place Northside’s 133½.

Cecilia finished behind third place St. Thomas More with 78½ points while St. Martinville had to settle for last place in the team standings with just 24 points.

Speedster Kavahra Holmes paced the Tigers in the running events while Travin Dural took blue ribbons in both the high jump and long jump and was named the meet’s outstanding field performer.

Holmes blazed to a 47.38 finish to win the 400 and also ran legs on The Bridge’s first place 4X200 and 4X400 relay teams. The senior also finished second in the 200.

Darrian Thomas collected BB’s other gold medal, winning the triple jump with a 45-11½ effort.

Bulldog athletes collected three blue ribbons. Kyler Perrault won the 800, Ian Taylor took the pole vault, and Jeremy Doucette claimed the gold in the shot put. He also placed third in the discus.

Newman Batiste accounted for the bulk of St. Martinville’s 24 points, finishing third in the high jump and fourth in the 400.

GIRLS

Cecilia had the best showing of the three St. Martin Parish girls teams, finishing third behind Northside and Teurlings Catholic in the team standings with 101 points.

The Lady Vikings dominated the competition, rolling up 201 points while the Lady Rebels trailed with 101.

Breaux Bridge was a distant fifth with 34 and St. Martinville finished last with 27 points.

The Lady Bulldogs collected three individual blue ribbons – all in field events – and also won the 4X100 relay.

Monique Blanchard placed first in the shot put, Mariah Dartez took gold in the discus, and Dani Whitaker won the pole vault and finished third in the high jump.

Lady Bulldog Thea Comeaux placed second in both the shot put and discus to help get points for Cecilia.

Breaux Bridge’s best showing was a second place in the 4X200 relay while St. Martinville relay teams finished third in both the 4X100 and 4X200.
