Melisa Babineaux discussed new CPR protocols at the April St. Martin Volunteers for Family and Community meetings.

Babineaux is the human resources director for Acadian Ambulance, and has previously worked as an EMT.

She told the group to think of CAB, which stands for “circulation, air-way, and breathing.” She also demonstrated this technique using a mannequin.

Babineaux showed the group how to perform this new method of CPR on adults, one- to eight-year-olds, and infant to one-year-olds. She emphasized, when calling 9-1-1, to inform the dispatcher the person is not breathing, your location, and if you forget how to do CPR, let the dispatcher know and they can talk you through it.

Babineaux also demonstrated the use of a defibrillator. Defibrillators are accessible at many businesses and talk the user through the process.

The most important thing is to get the person breathing by performing CPR until help arrives.

Members also made final plans for state convention, their Grand Coteau tour, EXPO, International Day and the Area IV meeting.

Gussie Delahousaye also gave important horticultural tips for the spring season.

The club reports more than 1,000 articles collected for the service men in Afghanistan.

Mini demonstrations were given on Chiuahua Bonnets, Handkerchief Bonnets for Preemies and a T-shirt quilt. Iva Theriot read “Twelve Ways to be Happy.”

Elsie Castille presided over the Breaux Bridge meeting. Iva Theriot presided over and Sue Theriot hosted the Catahoula meeting. Kim Gravouilla led the group in the pledge of allegiance and club collect. Dolores Mills led the group in the recitation of the pledge in French.
