St. Martinville – Parish high schools are in the final week of regular season baseball play and both Breaux Bridge and Cecilia are hoping to land berths in the state Class 4A playoffs.

Last week Breaux Bridge chalked up back-to-back wins over St. Martinville and then romped past Sacred Heart of Ville Platte in a non-league game on Saturday. The three victories boosted the Tigers to a 16-10, 5-3 record. With their final two 5-4A games against league-leading St. Thomas More this week Breaux Bridge face a strong challenge. Under a best case scenario The Bridge could finish up the season with a 7-3 district record. But with losses to the Cougars, the Tigers could end up at 16-12, 5-5.

Cecilia lost both of its district games to STM last week, but got back in the win column by defeating Port Barre 6-1 Saturday in a non-district contest. The Bulldogs’ final 5-4A games are against a strong Teurlings Catholic squad. Wins over the Rebels would put Cecilia at 19-7, 6-4 for the year, but if the ’Dogs stumble they could end up at 17-9, 4-6.

St. Martinville is struggling through a rough season, having failed to win a district game in eight outings.

By this time next week Breaux Bridge and Cecilia will know their fate regarding the state playoffs.
