St. Martinville – A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 5, 2012, at Notre Dame Catholic Church for Newman Stephen Laz Braud Sr., 85, who passed away on Friday, December 30, 2011, at Lafayette General Medical Center.
Father Augustinus Seran, SVD, will officiate at the funeral Mass. Scriptures will be read by Lynnette M. Braud and Natalie C. Lindon. Gift bearers will be Walter Braud and Ursula Caldwell. Entombment will follow at St. Michael Mausoleum in St. Martinville. Repast will be held at Notre Dame Parish Hall.
Newman Stephen Laz Braud Sr. was born on January 1, 1926, in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Granville and Ethel Braud. Newman received his Bachelor’s degree in 1950 from Xavier University in New Orleans, and his Master’s degree from Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. After moving to the Acadiana area in 1950, he began his post-graduate studies at the University of Colorado in Denver, continued at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette (now ULL), and the University of Houston.
Mr. Braud was a WWII Veteran, having honorably served his country in the United States Army. He retired from the St. Martin Parish School Board where he worked in multiple capacities as an educator. After retirement, he later served as a lieutenant in the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Department. He was also an independent insurance agent for Aetna Insurance Company, a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., as well as a longtime member of the Notre Dame Usher Board, the Retired Teachers Association, St. Martin Parish Planning Commission, and Phi Delta Kappa.
Mr. Braud was an outstanding husband and father, an amazing grandfather, and a dedicated educator who impacted all those with whom he came in contact. He was a vibrant and captivating man who will be missed and forever cherished.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 59 years, Melba Danzie Braud; one son, Michael Patrick John Braud of Colorado; one daughter, Lynnette Miguel Braud of New Orleans; one brother, Walter Braud (Dorothy) of Sacramento, California; two sisters, Ursula Caldwell (Richmond) of Roseville, California, and Louella McDaniel of Applevalley, California; a loving sister-in-law, Marion Braud of Altadena, California; one granddaughter, Natalie Christine Lindon of St. Martinville; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by one son, Newman Stephen Braud Jr.; one daughter, Madeleine Braud Lindon; two brothers, Granville Braud Jr. and Roland Braud Sr.; and two sisters, Ethelyn Thomas and Joyce Benemie.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Notre Dame Catholic Church on Thursday, January 5th from 7 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. A rosary will be recited at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
Pallbearers will be Elbert Braud Sr., Glenn Johnson, Paulmer Johnson, Phil Lindon, Leo Pitte and Herman Polk.
Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Braud, Dr. Kenneth Brown, Winston Burns, Lloyd Foote, Peter Johnson, Randall Menard, William Tanner and Cramin Wiltz.
