'Virtual school' for St. Martin Parish?

Breaux Bridge – The St. Martin School Board is expected to decide the fate of a proposal by Superintendent Richard Lavergne to establish a virtual school program in the parish when it meets Wednesday.

The monthly board meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Instructional Center, 111 Courville Street in Breaux Bridge.

Approval of implementing the virtual school program beginning with the 2012 summer school is among the items to be considered.

Basically, the program would allow students to attend classes online without physically reporting to a school campus.

In addition to a number of routine matters, today’s agenda also includes;

•An executive (secret) session to consider a) an allowance and/or waiver of insurance and retirement benefits for a former employee as part of compromise and in anticipation of litigation; b) approval of settlement negotiation sin the matter entitled “Michelle Gaubert Boudreaux vs. St. Martin School Board” (workers compensation); c) approval of settlement negotiations in the matter entitled “St. Martin School Board vs. Texaco Inc., et al.

•Board members have requested to discuss a) dress code (sweatshirts) at Cecilia Schools – Frederic Stelly; b) buses traveling on private property – Jimmy Blanchard; c) Veterans Day program at Cecilia High – Floyd Knott; d) selection of architectural firm for new instructional center – Knott; e) superintendent’s contract – Knott; f) charter schools – Richard Potier; g) bond money – Potier; h) alternatives for the cost for the use of AccuFund – Mark Hebert.

•Consider citizen’s request to appear before the board

•Under personnel changes, non-renewal of contract.

•Consider interagency agreement with the SMILE Head Start Program.

•Consider request for waiver of sales tax penalties for Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp.
