The win kept The Bridge perfect at 5-0 as the Tigers wrapped up pre-district play. The Panthers fell to 2-3.
The Landry-to-Dural combo was good for three touchdowns over the night while the Tigers kept Woodlawn off balance by rushing for 345 yards on the ground. Senior linebacker Lamar Louis, filling in on the offensive side of the ball for injured Darrian Thomas, came through in a big way, rushing for 201 yards on a workhorse 23 carries. Adrian Menard added 141 stripes and two touchdowns, including a 72-yard explosion on Breaux Bridge’s second snap of the game.
But the underdog Panthers just wouldn’t quit, battling the Tigers down to the final buzzer.
After Menard’s stunning run, Woodlawn answered with a 45-yard TD pass from Kendall Barnes to Jamaal Lofton to knot the score. Barnes would finish with five TD passes (four to Lofton) and 210 yards on 15 completions.
The Tiger defense came through minutes later when the Panthers picked off a Landry pass at the BB 37. Three plays produced only two yards and Woodlawn was forced to punt.
The defense also blocked a 31-yard field goal attempt by Woodlawn midway through the period.
Breaux Bridge regained the lead late in the quarter when Dural took a pass from Landry 47 yards to pay dirt.
But a long kickoff return put the Panthers in business at the BB nine and Barnes connected with Lofton on the second play of the second stanza and the game was tied at 14-all.
Landry put Breaux Bridge back on top minutes later with a 13-yard strike to Dural that capped an impressive 77-yard drive.
The lead wouldn’t hold however, as the Panthers added two more touchdowns before intermission to go up 28-21 at the half. Woodlawn scored on passes of 18 and 66 yards to stun the Tigers. The first score was set up when the Panthers turned a fake punt into a 53-yard gain.
But the third quarter belonged to the Tigers.
Menard went in from the one after a 40-yard ramble by Louis. Then Tyren Alexander blocked a Woodlawn punt, scooped up the ball and took it into the end zone from eight yards out.
Woodlawn appeared out of it minutes later when Josh Williams returned a Panther punt 85 yards for a touchdown. Kagan Breaux’s PAT boosted Breaux Bridge into a commanding 42-28 lead going into the final quarter.
But the Tigers couldn’t seem to stop the Woodlawn passing attack as Barnes quickly moved the Panthers into the red zone with completions of 31 and 28 yards. Brent Terrence bulled in from the four at the 10:24 mark and the BB lead was down to 42-35.
The Tigers got a bit sloppy on Woodlawn’s next possession and were flagged for pass interference and then encroachment to help the Panthers advance across midfield. Barnes capped the drive with a 28-yard strike to Lofton and the PAT kick made it a tie game with 4:01 remaining.
Louis and Menard went to work, alternating on carries to move the Tigers to the Panther 16 with 37 second showing. Breaux Bridge was flagged for a false start, but a facemask penalty went against Woodlawn. On third down at the eight Landry hit Dural for the winning TD with just eight seconds left in the game.
The Tigers, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, celebrate homecoming Friday as they begin their drive for the district championship by hosting parish rival St. Martinville (4-1).
