Baton Rouge – Breaux Bridge junior Kavarha Holmes blazed to a 46.31 finish in the 400-meter dash at the State Farm/LHSAA Class 4A track and field meet here last Saturday to set a Class 4A state record. And it was the fastest high school time in the country this season.

Holmes also anchored The Bridge’s winning 4X200 and 4X400 relay teams as the Tigers claimed the Class 4A team championship. Breaux Bridge collected 60 points to edge second place Haughton with 54.

For his efforts Holmes was named the meet’s outstanding athlete.

Other members of The Bridge’s winning relay teams were Chandler Thomas, Travin Dural and Tyler Ledet.

Dural came close to matching Holmes’ outstanding performance, He also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.54, just a hair behind first place Derrick Raymond of East Jefferson, who was clocked at 21.51; won the high jump at 6-8, and placed third in the long jump with a 22-11 effort.

Also helping the Tigers to the team title was Quentin Thomas, who finished third in the shot put with a throw of 50-3¼.

The Cecilia Bulldogs picked up two silver medals, with William LeBlanc finishing second in the high jump and Jeremy Doucette second in the shot put.

And Bulldog Kyler Perrault placed sixth in the 800.

St. Martinville’s Artrail Skipper finished third in the triple jump at 47-3½, less than six inches off the winning mark.

No St. Martin Parish girls earned points at the state meet.
