Cecilia – Cecilia High School captured both the boys and girls team championships at the annual St. Martin Parish Relays held here last Friday.

The Bulldogs overpowered Breaux Bridge and St. Martinville in the boys division, piling up 83 points while The Bridge finished second with 68 and The ’Ville was a distant third with 37.

It was much closer in the girls division, with the Lady Bulldogs edging St. Martinville by just two points, 85-83. Breaux Bridge’s Lady Tigers managed only eight points.

The Bulldogs were led by Outstanding Track Performer Montrel Carter and Jeremy Doucette, who tied with BB’s Travin Dural for Outstanding Field Performer.

Carter barely missed setting a new parish record in the 100, won the 300 hurdles and ran a leg on the winning 4X100 relay team.

Doucette took the gold in both the shot put and discus, while Dural won both the long jump and high jump.

The Bulldogs were very strong in the field events, winning five of the seven competitions. Overall Cecilia claimed 21 first, second and third place ribbons.

The only record to fall in the boys division was the 4X200 relay mark. The BB quartet of Chandler Thomas, Travin Dural, Tyler Ledet and Kavarha Holmes was clocked at 1:28, nipping the old record of 1:28.22 set last year by the Cecilia team of Adrien Noel, Montrel Carter, Brooklyn Williams and Gerald Etienne.

GIRLS

Cecilia’s Dani Whitaker tied with SM’s Chelsea James for Outstanding Field Performer. Whitaker won the high jump and pole vault while James took gold in the long jump.

Outstanding Track Performer was Tranai Trahan of St. Martinville, who won the 3200 meter run and placed second in both hurdle races.

Only one record fell in the girls division. Cecilia’s Monique Blanchard won the shot put with a throw of 36-11, to wipe out the old record of 35-11 set in 1995 by Lady Bulldog Shonda Guidry.

Cecilia finished with 22 medals, including 10 first places, six seconds and six thirds. St. Martinville claimed 21 medals, but only seven firsts along with nine seconds and five thirds.

Cecilia also dominated the junior high school division, rolling past Breaux Bridge and St. Martinville. Full results of the junior high division will appear in next week’s issue.
