LAFAYETTE — Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Lt. Craig Stansbury said a six-year-old child died this morning after being caught in a school bus door and being dragged about 20 feet.

The child has been identified as Lederion Miller. Stansbury said Miller attempted to board the bus with other children at a neighborhood school bus stop at the 300 block Duhon Road.

“From what we can gather, when the door closed, (it) caught a piece of his clothing,” Stansbury said.

The driver did not see the child and continued to drive down the dead-end road, an estimated "20 feet or so."

After looping back from the dead end, according to Stansbury, the driver saw the child on the side of the road. The child's mother had rushed outside to her son's side.

Miller was rushed to Women's and Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the bus accident.

The Sheriff’s Office was notified of the accident shortly after 7 a.m., he said.

The bus was on its way to Milton Elementary

The driver was identified as Harold Thibodeaux.
