WEST CALUMET FLOODGATE – One of a matched set of floodgates that keep a swollen Wax Lake Outlet from flooding Bayou Teche. The front-running teams will probably be getting here in the middle of the night. The majority who make it this far downstream – mile 118.5 in the 130-mile ultra marathon – will get here after two days and nights of paddling. The gates could be wide open if the Atchafalaya River is low enough, but the likelihood is that portages will be required around the gates and a stiff current to content with in the canal. Paddlers who don’t feel up to it have the option to “vehicle portage” around the Outlet. (Staff Photo by Ken Grissom)
