The surging St. Martinville Tigers knocked off parish rivals Breaux Bridge and Cecilia last week, avenging losses suffered earlier in the season and improving their chances for a berth in the state playoffs later this month.

The ’Ville had dropped back-to-back games to the two other parish teams to start the first round of the District 5-4A campaign. But since then the Tigers have been on a tear, winning five straight league contests, including victories over district leader Northside and a strong St. Thomas More squad.

Coach Darrel Mitchell’s team takes a 17-11, 5-2 record into a difficult district stretch that included a game against Northside (23-3, 6-1)last night (Tuesday) and a matchup with St. Thomas More (23-6, 4-3) on Friday.

Breaux Bridge recovered from its Feb. 29 68-53 loss to St. Martinville by edging Teurlings Catholic 50-47 on Friday to improve its record to 6-17 overall and 3-4 in district play.

But Cecilia went 0-2 last week, falling to Northside on Tuesday by 68-54 before Friday’s 68-57 loss to The ’Ville. The losses left the Bulldogs at 12-13 for the year and 2-5 against 5-4A opponents.

Regular season action winds up next Tuesday, Feb. 14. Remaining games include:

•Friday, Feb. 10 – St. Martinville at St. Thomas More; and Breaux Bridge at Cecilia.

•Tuesday, Feb. 14 – Teurlings Catholic at St. Martinville; St. Thomas More at Cecilia; and Northside at Breaux Bridge.
