The St. Martinville Sr. High School Tiger cheerleaders’ hard work finally paid off as the group walked away with awards from numerous competitions held at cheer camp recently.

The 14-member squad attended the Southwestern Cheerleaders Association Cheer Camp July 16-18 at UL-Lafayette’s Bourgeois Hall. The annual camp is geared to provide ultimate training for serious cheerleaders with special attention on cheers, chants, hand and body movements, stunting, jumping techniques, and dance skills. The camp also focuses on important life skills such as team building and leadership.

Numerous competitions were held during the three-day event, with St. Martinville placing in all categories. The squad walked away with the Home Cheer Champs award for earning a perfect score. They also placed first runners-up in the SCA Cheer Competition; and third place for Home Dance.

The camp also featured individual competitions, with St. Martinville sweeping all three events. Danielle LaCoste earned the titles of Best Jumper and Best Tumbler; while Kimber Chataignier was named Dance-Off Champ in the Advanced Dance competition. She was also a finalist in the Jump-Off contest.

Campers who show excellence in all areas of cheer are eligible to compete for the title of All American Cheerleader. Those selected are invited to perform live during the half-time show at the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Fla. in January. Among those selected as All American Cheerleaders were Ashley Douet, Kimber Chataignier, Ashley Bonhomme, Nasia Thibodeaux, ReAnna Benjamin and Alyssa Stelly.

Other awards garnered by the Tigers during the camp included: superior ratings in both cheer evaluations given by SCA staff; and the symbolic “spirit stick” all three days of camp.

Members of the 2010-2011 SMSH Tiger Cheerleaders include seniors Cassie Wharf and Latricia Marshall; juniors Kimber Chataignier, Ashley Douet, Nasia Thibodeaux, Maddi Laviolette, ReAnna Benjamin, Ashley Bonhomme, Megan Breaux, Lexi LeBlanc and Desiree Theriot; and sophomores Alyssa Stelly, Danielle LaCoste and Kylie Thibodeaux.
