A recent AARP Bulletin included a chart showing the average auto insurance premium in 2010 for each of the nation’s states. The rates were calculated for more than 2,400 vehicles for model year 2010, based on a 40-year-old single male, with $500 deductible on collision and comprehensive coverage.
Louisiana’s average, at $2,511, was by far the most expensive, almost $500 higher than the next nearest state, Michigan at $2,098, and almost triple the rate of the least expensive state, Vermont at $969.
Louisiana’s rate was also well above our neighboring states. The Texas average was $1,463, Mississippi $1,475, and Arkansas $1,649.
There were no reasons given for the differences, but the figures are both stunning and disheartening.
GOLDEN TONGUE . . .
St. Martinville native Lt. Gov. Scott Angelle drew admiring reviews for the rousing speech he delivered in Lafayette at the recent rally in opposition of the federal government’s moratorium on offshore drilling.
Scott has always been an animated orator, and he is obviously improving with experience.
Breaux Bridge folks who have seen him in action, along with popular emcee state Rep. Fred Mills Jr., at several Chamber of Commerce banquets, are not surprised that he can get his message across effectively and in an often entertaining way.

Montana Musings – It’s been a busy summer for Maria and me, as we once again were able to travel up to beautiful northwestern Montana to help out with the big equestrian event staged by Jerome and Becky Broussard at their wonderful Rebecca Farm in Montana’s Flathead Valley.
The event was the largest equestrian triathlon in the U.S. and one of only 12 stops on the FEI World Cup™ Eventing tour. It drew just over 500 horses, mostly from the northwestern states, but also a good representation from Canada and the East Coast. We got to see a big jet fly into Glacier International with a load of 19 horses from the Pennsylvania/Kentucky/Virginia area that were unloaded right into their trailers. It was a first for the airport and the Event.
The 500+ horses represented several dozen different breeds, from Thoroughbred and Tennessee Walking Horse to American Warmblood, Arabian and Irish Draught.
We were also able to drive up to Logan’s Pass in Glacier National Park, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and took time to pick a load of luscious cherries at a loaded orchard on the east side of Flathead Lake.
A wonderful getaway, especially with the mild to cool and dry weather.
