Braud died Dec. 30, 2011, at the age of 85. His widow, Melba Braud, accepted a plaque summarizing his many contributions.
The council also passed a resolution proclaiming June 5 “Newman Braud Day.”
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Braud retired from the St. Martin Parish School Board after serving in various capacities. He served as a lieutenant for the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office.
He was a longtime member of the St. Martin Parish Planning Commission and the 911 Board of Commissioners, and he was also on the redistricting committee for the St. Martin Police Jury after the 1980 and 1990 censuses.
“I thought when he retired I would have him all to myself,” Mrs. Braud told the council. “But he knew that you needed him even more than I did.”
