OPELOUSAS ‑ The Opelousas Police Department arrested Jonell Rubin on Thursday on charges of First Degree Murder and Aggravated Rape.

He is accused of the May 1988 murder of Brenda DuPont, 19, who was also raped.

With advances in DNA testing the Acadiana Crime Lab in conjunction with the Opelousas Police Department was able to link a profile developed to Jonell Rubin of Opelousas.

In February of this year that profile enabled to allow investigators to move towards issuing a warrant for Rubin.

Thursday, Rubin, who was already in the Opelousas city jail on domestic violence charges, was charged with the murder and rape. He was 19 at the time of the crimes.

DNA sampling is now part of the police booking procedure in Louisiana. Samples are compared to those on file in open cases.

Dupont’s sister, Linda Moreau, said she never thought she’d see an arrest.

I agree..the man has been going to jail plenty of times. Why wasn't he arrested him then. Not only that, why OPD didn't left a rape kit on the shelf all this time when other previous kits had already been sent to the lab, why didn't they send that one. Seems to me it would have been a priority since it was only one of the two cold cases in opelousas. Isn't it a lil fishy that the Detective Grimmett retired right after the case has been closed. This man did not commit this crime!
