LAFAYETTE -- Some motorists were stuck on an I-10 bridge more than four hours Friday morning following a multi-vehicle pileup.

As late morning, all traffic lanes were open following closure from the accident near Ramah.

Separate crashes closed the highwray at its intersection with I-49 and with La. 415.

Police said a mad died in the Whiskey Bay bridge accident when his pickup was hit by an 18-wheeler.

The pickup truck driver, name withheld pending notification, was eastbound when his vehicle hit a guard rail and crossed into the middle of the roadway.

An 18-wheeler traveling the same direction struck the pickup.

The wreck caused a pileup as motorists failed to stop in time on the icy roadway at the base of the bridge.

Another 18-wheeler came to a stop, avoiding the first wreck, but a third 18-wheeler failed to stop in time, striking the second one.

Within 100 yards of the two wrecks, a fourth 18-wheeler came to a stop in the roadway.

That rig was hit from behind by two cars.

Police said motorists were stuck on the bridge for four hours as authorities worked to clear the roadway.
