Family has identified the victim as Landon Broussard. Broussard is recovering at the University of South Alabama Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Mobile, where he was listed in critical condition Sunday night.
He was struck in the top left chest and the lightning exited through his leg.
Broussard is the son of Lisa and Clay Broussard.
Lifeguards told Local 15 TV News TV station there were approximately 20 people on the beach when weather took a turn for the worse. As beachgoers were packing up and leaving, a lightning bolt hit the water’s edge near the boy.
“As soon as the lightning bolt hit, everyone hit the ground and took off running,” life guard Justin Pearce told Local 15 TV station. “Then we saw a person laying by the edge of the water.”
A family member started CPR immediately on the boy and continued until lifeguards ran down and took over. Broussard was brought to safe cover in a nearby pavilion until paramedics arrived.
Broussard was rushed to USA Medical Center. The GSFD battalion chief told Local 15 News TV station paramedics performed CPR in the ambulance on the way to the hospital and were able to get a pulse and the boy started breathing.
