BATON ROUGE – Aging former congressman and state legislator Buddy Leach put the Louisiana Democratic Party back on its feet. Now it has picked a young person to chase the Republicans.

State Sen. Karen Peterson, 42, of New Orleans was elected in secret balloting at the party’s weekend convention.

Leach was selected in 2010 in a special voting and stabilized the party’s affairs.

Now party activist want someone else to help attract candidates for this fall’s congressional elections as well as groom them for the next statewide voting, particularly the governor’s post which will be an open seat.
