Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., said an Iota man is suspected of illegally slaughtering an impregnated cow.

Billie Joe Kilgore, 697 Mamou Prairie Road, is wanted in connection with the slaughter of the cow and its fetus, which occurred off Grey Fox Hwy. north of Iota.

An arrest warrant for Kilgore was issued on Dec. 9 by the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Louisiana Livestock Brand Commission.

He was booked into the Acadia Parish Jail on Saturday and charged with theft over $100.

Strain said charges in the warrant lude livestock theft, criminal trespassing and aggravated cruelty to animals.

Kilgore is alleged to have slaughtered the cow in mid-November and removed the hindquarters and right front shoulder. The fetal calf was discarded at a distance from the carcass in an apparent attempt to make the slaughter look like it was done by a coyote pack.

The value of the cow was estimated at $1,500.
