St. Martinville – A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday February 18, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Notre Dame Catholic Church for Inez “Nippy” Journet, an 88- years-old native of St. Martinville.

She passed away on Monday, February 6, 2012, at 5:30 a.m. at St. Agnes Health and Rehabilitation Center of Breaux Bridge.

Rev. Sean Augustinus, S.V.D., will be the Celebrant of the Mass.

Interment will follow at St. Michael Mausoleum.

Inez was a lifelong member of Notre Dame and a member of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary Court 54. Inez lived a charmed life. At birth, she was so tiny that she could not be fed with a bottle. Her milk had to be placed in an old fashioned nipple to feed her, which was how she got the nickname “Nippy.” She was always treated kindly by most people; they let her have her way most of the time because the general public belief was that, “She would not live long.” Needless to say, she was always a drawing card wherever she went due to her size.

Inez was a graduate of St. Edward’s High School. She was gainfully employed all of her life. Inez retired from the Louisiana Health System after working for 30 years. She worked at the St. Martinville Health Unit, which in the past, provided health services for not only the City of St. Martinville, but all St. Martin Parish. Due to her enthusiasm, passion and size she was well-known both in St. Martinville and throughout the parish.

Inez was faithful in reciting the rosary. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting. With her friends and family, she loved going to the casino, playing cards and other games of chance with them. She was also known for growing roses and plants. She was well traveled and looked forward to going on vacations with her family and friends.

She is survived by three nephews, Matthew DeRouen of San Diego, California, Edward Journet of Denver, Colorado, and Lester Journet and his wife Tammy Journet of Fairfax, Virginia; two nieces, Deborah DeRouen of San Diego, California and Renee Journet-Johnson of Morro Bay, California.

Other relatives include a brother-in-law, Thomas DeRouen of San Diego, California; Melazie Vavasseur Jacobs and her family, Raymond Vavasseur and wife Gloria Vavasseur and family; three godchildren, Betty Bryant of Lake Charles, José Alexander of St. Martinville and Dr. Jarvis Jacobs of Murphy, Texas; and a host of great nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Phileoman Arnaud: parents, Ignace Journet and Gladys Vavasseur Journet; two brothers, Herman Journet and Leo Journet; two sisters, Hilda DeRouen and Catherine James; two nephews, Allan DeRouen and Clyde Albert Berard; and a sister-in-law, Marie Sampey Journet.

Visitation will be Saturday, February 18, 2012, at Notre Dame Church from 7 a.m. until time of service. A rosary will be recited at 9 a.m.

The family would like to thank all who showed wonderful acts of kindness and thoughtfulness during her long illness. Special thanks to her dear friends Inez Neveu and Melvin Neveu Sr. for all of their love and care and to the caretakers at St. Agnes Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility, who treated her like family.

Arrangements entrusted to Journet and Bolden Funeral Home Inc., New Iberia, 337- 369-3638.
