Mother’s Day once again! We’ll gather for a crawfish boil at Chane and Tina’s and Tamra’s house this year. They’ve got a cool and neat bungalow. Good thinking when they added an outdoor kitchen. I am comfortable and feel at home there because they’re surrounded by sugarcane fields. And close-by are nice down-to-earth homes with just a little black top road that runs in front with very little traffic. Music to my ears is hearing the sounds of wind blowing through the sugar cane leaves and watching them dance to the wind. It’s tranquil, peaceful and very relaxing. Visible is the endless spacious sky and changing weather coming from which ever direction. It is cool et mon lam sa!
Their neighborhood has developed a lot in recent years. Most every one there on that little stretch of road is related. They stay home to party, all love to cook and drink their beer and hear their music, especially Hank’s!
Shelby Guilbeau says Abbe Latiolais would often repeat the saying “the good old days.” He told Shelby about when they used to spend days on their houseboats fishing. There were a few retired older men in the group in their own boats. Every morning they would go to one’s houseboat for coffee. This one morning they were at Abbe’s. They were gathered around the pot. Abbe asked Nick Latiolais “quel coulée” in French, which also is meant for “which pouring?”
He was really asking which pouring there was on the coffee using the same grinds, the first, second or third. The others, not knowing, thought they were saying which “coulée” they were going to fish that day. After all, Abbe told Shelby that was where he and Nick caught the most. So the others would try to guess where they would go.
They had two drums on the deck to catch rain water for drinking. Mr. Felix Blanchard, one of the campers, wanted a drink of water, so on his way out, he grabbed a long handled cup and dipped it in the drum for a drink. Abbe told him, “Felix, don’t drink that water.” But it was too late and he drank it. “That’s the drum we keep our turtles in.” Abbe said. Felix believing this was true had an upset stomach for two days. Ces’t tout!
Viv Brasseaux told me her nursery will have their spring and summer gardening close-out sale from May 14 until May 25.
Many years ago I had carpal tunnel surgery on both hands but eventually my problem returned. I still lose feelings in my fingers and drop things. Even money! One day I’d made chicken salad to eat with crackers. I pulled the pack from the pantry to place it on the cabinet, but in flight I dropped it to the floor. I picked it up, fumbled it in the air and kept dropping it over again. After about the fifth try they were so smashed, I ate them with milk and ate the chicken with a fork. Do silly things ever happen to you?
I came very close to working the entrance gate at the Crawfish Festival this year. Someone called last week for me to volunteer Sunday from noon to four. Ah sa fais mon content like when I did it same time last year and said OK, happy to do it. I like doing that because I’d get a free gate pass by chance to see old friends and I get a free festival T-shirt. But I got cancelled out, Aw, didn’t need me after all. And I missed my T-shirt. Well, maybe next year!
Bonne journey! Amètie à tout.
