St. Martinville – Thomas J. Boutte has resigned his commission as Ward 1 justice of the peace.

Gov. Bobby Jindal has not yet set a special election to replace Boutte, who was due to serve until the end of 2014.

Parish President Guy Cormier said it seems likely a special election could piggyback on municipal elections scheduled for the spring.

“But a justice of the peace or a constable’s commission is good parishwide, so others from other wards can fill in in the meantime,” Cormier said.

Boutte said he is stepping down for health reasons.
