The Bulldogs won district championships in baseball, football and volleyball, while earning runner-up honors in boy’s basketball and track.
At The Bridge, the Lady Tigers claimed a district title in volleyball while BBHS also finished second in football and baseball, as well as softball.
Hurricane Gustav caused havoc early in the football season, forcing the cancellation of almost all Week 1 games in south Louisiana.
Athletic highlights during 2008 included:
Basketball
•Cecilia earned runner-up honors in District 6-3A with a 19-12, 7-2 record.
•St. Martinville claimed a wildcard playoff berth from District 5-4A, finishing regular season play at 22-12, 7-5.
But both teams were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
Track
•The Bulldogs finished second in 6-3A and Dexter Miller was the state high jump champion in Class 3A.
•Breaux Bridge’s Ricky Babineaux captured the Class 4A state championship in the 300-meter hurdles.
Baseball
•Cecilia won the 6-3A championship with a 20-7, 9-3 record, and advanced to the second round of the playoffs before being eliminated.
•Jamie Calais was voted Coach of the Year in District 6-3A.
•Breaux Bridge finished second in District 5-4A at 20-7, 10-2, but lost in the second round of the playoffs.
•St. Martinville’s Gordy Bourque set a new SMSH record for home runs in a season, sending 12 balls over the fence.
Softball
•Breaux Bridge’s Lady Tigers claim runner-up honors in 5-4A with a 14-12-1, 9-3 record, but fall in the first round of the playoffs.
•St. Martinville (10-12) lands a wild card berth in the playoffs but exits after round one.
Football
•Cecilia goes unbeaten in District 6-3A to claim back-to-back championships. The Bulldogs reach the semifinals for the first time since 1995, but are eliminated by state champ Lutcher to finish with a 10-3, 4-0 season record.
•Cecilia’s Terry Martin repeats as 6-3A Coach of the Year, while Bulldog lineman Gadge Norris is named the district’s MVP on defense. Norris, along with offensive lineman Rodie Robin and linebacker Marcus Wiltz, earn first team All State honors in Class 3A.
•Breaux Bridge is runner-up in District 5-4A and advances to the quarterfinals before losing to Archbishop Shaw, the state runner-up. Tigers’ season record: 9-3, 5-1.
•Tiger linebacker Tim Duhon chosen the district’s defensive MVP while he and defensive lineman Churphy Steward land berths on the Class 4A All State first team.
Volleyball
•Breaux Bridge goes 10-0 to claim Div. II, District 2 championship. Advances to state semifinals before losing to finish 19-4 for the year.
•BB’s Judy Romero nabs district Coach of the Year honors while Lady Tiger Breoni Mitchell is named MVP.
•Cecilia’s Lady Bulldogs also go undefeated in Div. III, District 2 to claim title. They lose in second round of playoffs to finish the year at 19-8.
•CHS’s Laurie Simon voted district’s Most Valuable Coach while Lady Bulldog Payton Mitchell earns MVP honors.
