FOR MILES – Students at St. Bernard’s School in Breaux Bridge collect loose change for Change for Miles benefiting Miles Perret Cancer Services. Change collected by the students, faculty and staff totaled $7,621.47. Over the past three years, they have raised more than $25,000 for the Change for Miles campaign. ARBOR DAY – The St. Martinville Garden Club celebrated Arbor Day on April 1 by planting a live oak tree on the grounds of the East Side Housing Development. Joining club members were Larry Pratt, executive director of the Housing Authority; Melton James, maintenance supervisor; and residents of two nearby apartments. Marjorie Melancon, Arbor Day chairman of the club, presented a brief program about the history of Arbor Day and the benefits trees provide and concluded by reading the poem “Trees” by Joyce Kilmer. FOREIGN WRITERS listen as Henderson Mayor Sherbin Collette, a commercial fisherman and trapper, describes the trials and joys of making a living in the swamp. The international group of novelists, journalists, poets and filmmakers are touring the South as part of “Writers in Motion,” a program of the University of Iowa. Local author-photographer Greg Guirard served as their guide to the Cajun country of the Atchafalaya Basin. The theme of the tour is “Fall and Recovery,” dealing with the aftermaths of the Civil War, Katrina and the BP oil spill. (Ken Grissom)

KIWANIS BUILDERS CLUB YOUTH from Trinity Catholic School in St. Martinville donated two cartons of toiletries Thursday, March 31, to Rayne’s Christian Service Center to aid victims of Rayne’s March 5 tornado. Members of the St. Martinville Kiwanis-sponsored club for seventh and eighth graders included, kneeling from left, Raven Kidder, Vice President Allie Champagne Alayna Sonnier; Lauren Richard; second row, Secretary Raya Jacob, Connor Breaux, Club President Marian Mouton, and Club Treasurer. They were joined by, third row from left, Kiwanis President Margaret Richard, Kiwanis Secretary Jean L.
