Truth in Crawfish Bill
The Louisiana Legislature is considering a compromise of Rep. Fred Mills' attempt to make restaurants tell diners when they are being served imported (Chinese, in most cases) crawfish. Instead, the lawmakers want the restaurateurs to tell you the truth when you ask if the crawfish are local or not. And of course not to advertise Louisiana crawfish when imported crawfish are being served.
This watered-down version of Mills' bill would work only if diners take the initiative and ask. And rigorous enforcement — i.e. catching them in a lie in the first place and then getting someone to do something about it — seems unlikely to say the least.
But if nobody pushes the issue, it begs the question does anybody care? Besides the crawfishermen and crawfish farmers, of course.
