CROWLEY – A new club, named YOUTHACT, which has recently been started at Crowley Middle School, is sponsored by the Crowley Rotary Club. The club’s focus is on community service and helping others as part of the application process. Twenty-two eight grade students were selected by charter members to join the club.
To foster vision of looking outside of oneself and service to others is the purpose of this middle level component of Rotary. It also fosters action, and doing something to make a real difference.
“These new members personify such energy and enthusiasm,” said Teresa Chance, assistant principal.
Chance explained that members have been busy for three weeks conducting their first school-wide project. In an effort to support families in need in the Crowley community, YOUTHACT has been collecting canned goods from fellow students.
“The overwhelming support demonstrated by Crowley Middle students has been outstanding,” added Chance excitedly.
On the morning of Thursday, November 20, club members loaded the donated goods onto a bus driven by Ms. Mary Leleux. The total amount of food collected, which totaled 66 boxes and 2126 pounds, was donated to the Crowley Christian Care Center.
“The club wishes to thank all who gave of their time and money that have made their first project a success,” stated Chance.
As Christmas approaches, club members have many exciting projects planned, such as visiting local assisted living residences next month.
A formal inaugural ceremony will be sponsored by the Rotary Club to welcome YOUTHACT members as partners later this fall.
