BB cruises past Gators, 34-7
Bridge is all alone as he avoids a
massive pileup onthis play against
Beau Chene last Friday. Among
the Tigers blockers is Jesse
Landry (66). The Bridge rolled to a
34-7 league victory over the
Gators, improving to 2-1 for the year.
PRAIRIE BASSE – Breaux Bridge opened its District 5-4A campaign in fine fashion here last Friday, cruising to a convincing 34-7 victory over the Beau Chene Gators.
The Tigers improved to 3-1 overall while Beau Chene dropped to 0-2.
Breaux Bridge piled up 248 yards rushing but two of its four touchdowns came through the air while a long punt return produced a third.
Junior running back Latrelyn Pete led all rushers with 112 yards and a TD on 14 carries. QB Hunter Landry completed 4-of-9 passes, that included TD tosses of 8 and 23 yards to Dayne Thibodeaux and Lance Derouselle, respectively.
The vaunted BB defense did its share in securing the victory, picking off two Gator passes and recovering two fumbles while limiting Beau Chene to 134 net yards for the night.
The hosting Gators threatened early, taking the opening kickoff and moving quickly to the BB 23. But a false start penalty and an incomplete pass slowed the drive and a 48-yard field goal attempt was wide right.
Breaux Bridge moved quickly into BC territory on a 16-yard run by Joston Dugas and a 31-yard ramble by Pete. But Dugas lost the ball on his next carry and the Gators recovered at their 17.
The Tigers lit up the scoreboard on a big 56-yard punt return by Layne Theriot late in the first period and Royce Darbonne added the PAT.
The Bridge got the ball right back when Trevence Patt intercepted a Paul Richard pass at the BB 44. But the Tigers couldn’t cash in on the turnover and had to punt just before the period ended.
Breaux Bridge wouldn’t be denied on its next possession, however, driving 58 yards in eight plays to add to their total. Landry went 3-for-3 and 40 yards on the possession, including a 23-yard TD toss to Lance Derouselle midway through the second stanza.
The Tigers added one more TD before intermission when a long punt return put them in business at the BC eight. Landry found Dayne Thibodeaux open in the end zone for the score and Darbonne’s kick made it 21-0.
Beau Chene dodged disaster just before intermission when BB’s Dempsey Davis returned an interception almost 75 yards for a TD that was nullified by a holding penalty.
Breaux Bridge added two more touchdowns in the third quarter, with the first coming after Jacoby Ledet recovered a Gator fumble at the BC 26. Pete reached the end zone on the next play and BB stretched its lead to 28-0.
Ledet also set up the next Tiger TD when he recovered a muffed punt at the BC 28. Pete rumbled for 22 yards and Keith Joseph went the final eight yards for the score.
Beau Chene got its only touchdown after recovering a BB fumble at the Tiger 30. A personal foul penalty against BB helped the Gators to a first down at the 12. After the Tigers were whistled for a holding penalty that wiped out an interception, Gator Devon Richard bulled his way from the two for the TD.
With Breaux Bridge going to its bench, the Gators threatened late in the game by driving to the Tiger 27. But a bad snap and an incomplete pass forced a 50-yard field goal attempt that was short and wide.
The Bridge travels again this Friday, making a short trip to meet parish rival St. Martinville.
