Rumors created water problems for Parks system

Rumors of a possible shut-off of the Parks water system caused added stress on the system during freezing conditions earlier this month.
At the Jan. 9 village council meeting, Mayor Kevin Kately said water customers need to pay attention to official communications and not respond to internet rumors. Those rumors had customers filling bathtubs and running washing machines in preparation for a shut-off that was never planned.

Board to consider salary supplement

After receiving a favorable audit report on its 2016-17 fiscal year operations and learning that sales tax collections seem to be on the rebound, school board members last week agreed to take a hard look at funding an additional one-time salary supplement for its employees.
CPA Russell Champagne of Kolder, Champagne, Slaven & Co. reviewed the results of last year’s audit with board members during their Jan. 10 meeting, reporting that the audit had “gone very well” and resulted in a “clean opinion” that contained only minor procedural discrepancies.

Magazine names BB ‘City of Year’

Acadiana Profile Magazine has named Breaux Bridge its “City of the Year” for 2018. At the Jan. 9 city council meeting, Mayor Ricky Calais said the accolade is a confirmation of what residents have long realized: That the city’s reputation is quickly gaining ground. Southern Living magazine listed Breaux Bridge as one of its “Small Towns We Love” last year.
In other business, the council approved a resolution supporting passage of the bond issue to finance expansion and improvements to the St. Martin Hospital.

SM chief reopens old murder cases

New Police Chief Richard “Ricky” Martin has begun a renewed effort to solve three cold murder cases, including one going back to 2014.
The victims were:
•Casey Alexander, 28, who was shot during a home invasion in 2014.
•Bianca Davis, 23, fatally wounded when caught in the crossfire of a dispute in 2015.
•Susan George, 50,found dead in her burning home in a 2016 incident ruled a homicide.

Contract extension for Beebe to be considered

The agenda for the St. Martin School Board’s December meeting includes consideration of an extension to Superintendent Dr. Lottie Beebe’s contract.
The board is scheduled to hold its regular meeting at 5 p.m. today (Wednesday) in its Administrative Office on Corporate Boulevard in Breaux Bridge.
The board has also scheduled a meeting of its Finance Committee at 4:30 p.m.
Dr. Beebe was named superintendent in July 2013 and her current contract is set to expire on June 30, 2018.
