Early voting to begin Saturday

Early voting for the upcoming Gubernatorial Primary Election will get underway this Saturday, Sept. 30.
    Parish Registrar of Voters Patricia T. Guidry says St. Martin Parish residents can cast early ballots at three locations – her office in the Courthouse Annex, 415 St. Martin Street in St. Martinville; at the Sydnie Mae Durand Senior Citizen Center (Council on Aging), 391 Cannery Road in Breaux Bridge; and at the Stephensville Fire Station, 1227 Stephensville Road in Lower St. Martin.
    Votes may be cast between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday, and then Monday, Oct. 2 through Saturday, Oct. 7.

Registered Voters
    Guidry reports that there are currently 36,529 registered voters in St. Martin Parish.
    The total includes:
    •24,706 white voters (67.6%), 10,923 Blacks (29.9%) and 900 other (2.5%).
    •14,406 Democrats (39.4%) of which 8,145 (56.6%) are Black, 6,104 (43%) are white, and 157 (1%) are other.
    •12,917 Republicans (35.4%) of which 12,292 (95.2%) are white, 350 (2.7%) are Black, and 275 (2.1%) are other.
    •9,206 other party or no party of which 6,310 (68.5%) are white, 2,428 (26.4%) are Black, and 468 (5.1%) are other.

    Statewide races drew dozens of hopefuls including St. Martinville native Jeff Landry who is one of 15 candidates  for governor.
    At the state level only Agriculture & Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain is unopposed.

    The list includes the candidates’ party affiliation (D-Democrat, R-Republican, I-Independent, NP - No Party) and race (B-Black, W-White).

Amendments

    No. 1 – Prohibits use of private funds in the administration of elections.
    No. 2 – Provides that the freedom of worship is a fundamental right worthy of the highest protection.
