Shanese Lewis, executive director of the Council on Aging for St. Martin Parish, was the guest speaker for the Jan. 10 meeting of Beta Rho Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. Lewis presented a program entitled Receiving Service: Making the Most of What We Give and Receive. Program leader for the evening was Louella Champagne.
Lewis led members on a tour of the Sydnie Mae Durand Activity Center and explained how the center connects seniors to vital services, social opportunities and community resources.
Members learned the center has operated for 48 years helping seniors to age gracefully and remain independent. The center provides home delivered meals, transportation and caregiving services.
Seniors 60 years or older gather daily to participate in exercises and art classes, play games, listen to nutritional educational and cultural presentations as well as being served a nutritional lunch daily.
Everyone agreed the center is a vital asset for the senior citizens of the parish and everyone
is fortunate to have Ms. Lewis and her staff continue to serve residents.
President Shirley Fuselier conducted the business meeting following the presentation and called on committee chair to report on activities to be held in the coming months.
Program chair Bobbie Theriot announced the next meeting will be held on Jan. 17 at the home of hostess and program leader Arleen Oubre. Mary Desormeaux of the St. Martinville Garden Club will present a program on You and Your Environment, What Your Efforts Can AccomplishLitter Prevention.
