St. Martinville – In recognition of this year’s 200th anniversary of the incorporation of St. Martinville, the theme of this year’s Rotary Mardi Gras Ball is Renaissance de la Ville. The 71st gala is set for Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Cade Community Center.

The St. Martin Parish Council last week agreed to dissolve the St. Luke Hospital District it has overseen jointly with St. Landry Parish since 1963.

Invasion of the kayaks!

KAYAK CITY – Racers in Tour du Teche III swarm through the boat ramp at Frankin’s Parc Sur on the last day of last year’s race. In previous years, Racers and Voyageurs – recreational paddlers vying for trophies – started an hour apart. This year the starts will be separated by two hours in an effort to bunch the paddlers from the two different divisions closer to the finish lines.

There will be a handful of canoes and a pirogue or two, also, but the kayak, the modern version of the Eskimo skin-on-frame boat, is the craft of choice for most recreational paddlers today. You’ll see them in every color of the rainbow as Tour du Teche IV flows through St.
