Butte La Rose
Helen Boudreaux
Bonjour!
Important information from Charles Cailloust: On Sept. 3, starting at 4 p.m., at the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum Auditorium, 100 S. River Road in downtown Baton Rouge, the non-profit Friends of the Atchafalaya will hold a public meeting concerning the future of the Atchafalaya Basin. This meeting will be open to the public and will provide access to representatives of several non-governmental groups, each of which is advancing conservation through work with policy-makers and partnerships with federal, state and/or local government agencies.
Joycelyn Spears from Hayes, a small community over by Lake Charles, visited the Petit Paris Café Sunday in search of French speaking locals. She’d understood from the radio, St. Martinville had a French table program like in Arnaudville. She speaks broken French and wants to come back into it. We talked a while and then she walked across the church parking lot to visit Cynthia Champagne at the Cultural Center by the oak tree. We recommended she go to the La Poussiere in Breaux Bridge and I’m pretty sure that was her next stop and vowed to return to visit here soon.
Got a call from Anna Thoman from Basile, when Jim Bradshaw moved his column to the Teche News, she subscribed to it to keep up with him. She loves Baja, Les Vieux Temps and my column. Anna recalls the last time she visited Butte La Rose was about 20 years ago. My mailing address is P.O. Box 1334, Breaux Bridge, LA 70517, for those of you who would like to send a short story to share for my column. Also send your phone number.
Water is very low in the Butte La Rose canal. I had another encounter with a snake on my porch a couple of weeks ago. This fight lasted a little longer and was more physical than the earlier one. I surprised it and it slid in a corner behind some paint cans. I threw in fresh moth balls. It probably couldn’t breathe and had to get out. I was bare footed and dancing the ballet. I tried the shop vac again. Not so lucky this time. It was able to squeeze itself through a small opening in the screen door, but I held it tight, and latched it, holding the snake in place while I ran out the other door with a hand saw and cut part of its tail off before it slipped under the house. Reckon he’s still looking for his tail?
Paul and Gaye Schloegel from New Orleans visited with Jean Gaye and Janelle Hebert this weekend. Janelle had an art show at Clementine’s Restaurant. The Schloegers love St. Martinville and Paul spent much of his childhood visiting with his grandmother, Laurance Bienvenu (Mrs. P.A. Bienvenu). Mais chers, welcome all the time.
Thea Sonnier is the new Petit Paris waitress, and Jason Morgan takes his cooking serious, aiming to please! And don’t forget the live music on Sundays from 10 to 1.
Joyce Smith is interested in getting together a Life-Writing Group in Breaux Bridge to give those interested in sharing their stories. The meetings would be once a week. She’ll also form a Pulpwood Queens Book Club. Kathy Patrick of Jefferson, Texas, started these groups; there are now 600 over the United States and abroad. The main goal is to promote literacy. Both of these groups will appeal to those who want to write and promote reading. These will be fun groups. Her number is 903-407-3731.
Bonne Fête à Carla de Jimmie.
